Food Review: Priscilla’s Ultimate Soul Food

Priscilla’s Ultimate Soul Food is a cafeteria style restaurant where you select the protein, side dishes and dessert of your choice. Out of all of my years living on the far westside of Chicago, I’ve only visited Priscilla’s once in my life. What I do recall was how great the fried chicken tasted!

My mother is a seasoned professional of visiting Pricilla’s.  Most times she’s ordering food from the online menu and picking up food from the express checkout section of the restaurant.

Today, we visited early afternoon, on a Thursday. It was only two other people in the restaurant.  This was perfect for me to eat a great meal, while conducting a virtual remote call during my lunch period.  I choose the fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and sweet potatoes. A side of corn bread comes with the meal.

My mother choose the short ribs with gravy, sweet potatoes and collard greens. She said the short ribs had a good flavor, but it was too fatty, and wished she had got the chicken.  Also, the collard greens needed a little sugar to cut the bitterness.  Hey, she’s the soul food cook of the family, so I trust her opinion – however, I wasn’t gonna let those collard greens go to waste, so I took them home and ate them later for dinner. They were okay to me.

Would I visit again, Yes and Amen! Plus I’ll go again in the middle of the week to avoid the Sunday church crowd. The soul food at Priscilla’s is much better than MacArthurs on Madison in Chicago. Why that restaurant is still opened is a mystery.

Update (9/3/2023): Today, I’ve gone back to Priscilla’s and experience the to-go area.  Ordering online was fast and convenient as there were other people waiting.  I decided to get the chicken wings, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, dressing (without gravy) and cranberry sauce, and a slice of caramel cake – yes a nice traditional southern meal.

Well, I’ll never ever order the dressing. It was horribly dry and sweet! This means they used jiffy mix or something similar. Sweet dressing is a no-no! The greens needed a little love, like some green seasoning. The caramel cake tasted dry and they didn’t use anything similar to Swan Cake Flour. The caramel tasted like the caramel sauce used in Mexican Flan.  If I go back, I’ll stick with what I like – the chicken wings, collard greens and mac and cheese.
