Today we’re visiting the Florida Everglades in South Florida. The Everglades Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale is 20 minutes away from our resort, which means no crazy Miami traffic! My goodness, the traffic is Miami feels much worse than Chicago! Anywhoo, I purchased tickets at online, which was a great choice as it was more crowded than I had expected.
When you arrive, you’re greeted by 5 peacocks at the entry, cooling off in the shade. I have a fear of birds, so this is not starting off well for me, but I get my nerves together for the adventure. Well when we turned the corner there were more larger birds outside, I don’t know what they were called, but I knew that I was not going to be one of the guests that would go viral on TikTok screaming frantically and running away from these things. Again, I collected myself and went to the restroom. Warning, these restrooms are warm and the water mechanisms are “good”, but you want to get in and out as fast as possible!
To check-in, went inside a cooling area where you can purchase items like souvenirs, ice cream, candies, chips, etc. After we got our wristbands, we waited in line outdoors under a canopy to attend the alligator show. It was blazing hot outside, but the canopy helped from getting sunburned, but I my face was pouring in sweat!
Twenty minutes later, we were able to go to the event area with the alligators. The trainer was very knowledgeable, but also retold a lot of corny jokes that I heard while waiting in line. The show lasts about 30-40 minutes, but it’s very educational and entertaining.
After the show, we walked to another area to board the airboat. At first I kept thinking how the hell am I going to get onto this boat, but THANK GOD I wore stretchy pants and was wearing very supportive shoes! This is a warning for anyone who may have had recent hip or knee surgery or you’re not in decent, not even great, but decent shape. You have to climb down to get into the airboat and you’ll have to climb up and out to leave the airboat. You will use a lot of core muscles you may have forgotten how to use! But that’s okay, this old girl got in and out of the boat with no major issues!
There’s about 20 or more airboats out there, as long as there are drivers, there will be enough room for everyone. The airboat tour was about 45 minutes to an hour. It’s very scenic. The captain was also very knowledgable about the wildlife, plant life and animals that were in the region. He also had a cajun accent that was kind of entrancing.
Well…while on the tour more birds can to sit on top of the airboat as we were going about 10 miles an hour at that point. My husband held my hand. I told him I was okay. We’re in their habitat – as long as none of the birds flew inside the boat – which they didn’t! Thank God!
