Today’s adventure is taking us to a few stops in the Wynwood Art District – Udon Wynwood, Wynwood Walls, Gelato E. Macchiato, Billionaire Boys Club, and The Art of Hip Hop.
I don’t know if I’m playing it safe, but the hubby and I aren’t those type of people that do tons of drinks and clubbing. This trip to Miami has been fun, entertaining and delicious. Except for the traffic. Yes, I complained about traffic while trying to get to Bayside Market. Major eye-roll!
Udon Wynwood
When you’re driving into the Wynwood Art District, there is so much graffati and it’s totally accepted here. I believe if it was anywhere else, you would think they were too “urban” and dirty. Parking can be very tight in this area, and I have a feeling, it doesn’t matter what day of the week or time of the day. After finding a parking garage, we walked back to the restaurant, which was about 7-10 minutes away.
The restaurant actually seemed out of place. We arrived when the restaurant opened at noon. We were literally the first dine-in customers for the day. So that means – we didn’t need reservations, but we had them anyway.
The inside of the restaurant is really nice and I thoroughly enjoyed our choices of appetizers and entrees, which was the Crispy Chicken Fingers and Curry Ramen with Pork Belly.
After leaving, we walked around outside in the 90 degree heat. We did stumble upon this really cool art gallery. I wish I knew the name of it, but the curator was working inside and saw us staring at the pieces in the window. She invited us in and we were amazed!
Wynwood Walls
Next on the list is Wynwood Walls. They truly need a space like this in Chicago. Upon entry, you can either check-in if you bought your tickets online, or purchase at the counter. Everything is credit card based. There is an official tour option, but we wanted to walk around at our own pace, so we chose the general admission option, which was $12 per person.
Wynwood Walls has structural art work indoors and outdoors; plus there’s virtual reality art too. I’ll also say that I’m not a fan of public restrooms, but these were really nice, clean, and spacious.
Gelato E. Macchiato
Across the street is Gelato E. Macchiato. It’s over 90 degrees outside and this ice cream shop is an oasis! There’s multiple flavors, but I decided on getting one scoop each of the raspberry and mango! Ooh what a flavor combo! The service was nice and quick.
Billionaire Boys Club
The hubby and I are fans of Pharrell Williams and didn’t realize he had a clothing store that’s referenced in some of his songs. While walking back towards the parking garage, we went into the store to see they had a lot of high-end clothing; meaning a hoodie costs over $100. Not that I couldn’t, but I didn’t want to seem to fan and sticker price shocked; so I didn’t take any photos while inside, but here’s a screenshot of the online store “sale”.
The Art of Hip Hop
Our final stop in the Wynwood Art District is at The Art of Hip Hop museum. The store curator and website says it’s dedicated to the visual creatives behind hip hop. There’s also a graffiti combo ticket available, but we had seen enough of that while we were driving in.
There were so many references I grew up on; as hip hop started in the 80s. I’ve seen it from the beginning. From the music, sound, music videos and clothing, it was great to walk back in time.
