UPDATE: As of February 10, 2020… Soul Crab Chicago closed, but if you can still read about my experience from the grand opening back in September 2019.
I know, it’s only September, but I truly believe Soul Crab Chicago is the best southern dining restaurant I’ve visited in 2019! The food, the chef, the ambiance, the music… ok I could just go on and on with how much I love this restaurant!
Getting into Soul Crab Chicago is like completing an assignment in Mission Impossible, but thankfully a friend of mine was having a private party a week before the restaurant’s grand opening back in August. Yeah she and Darius go way back as colleagues – talk about networking!
Thankfully during the private event, the menu included items that were on the normal menu as well as speciality items. I wish I could have sampled everything, but what I did eat was delicious, including the alcoholic beverages. I was wondering if the bartender was “heavy-handed” or is this just how it’s done at Soul Crab Chicago.
The portions are huge, and I was able to save some for leftovers. The fried green tomatoes were kicked up a notch with lump crab meat. I also had the famous Lemon Pepper Honey Fried Chicken with Macaroni and Cheese and Whipped Sweet Potatoes. I’ve seen Chef Darius cooking this dish on his YouTube channel as well as on the Food Network’s – Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri. All I can say is that the flavors explode in your mouth! To top everything off, I had the White Hennessey Peach Cobbler. Yes! That was everything and more with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Finding parking in the Logan Square neighborhood can be a challenge. I would suggest that you go during the week and in the middle of the afternoon. Since the opening, I’ve seen lines of people waiting on Chef Darius Williams’ and EatSoulCrab’s Instagram feed. Even in the rain people are waiting to get in. The restaurant holds about 50 guests, and there’s a really nice outdoor patio.
