From Chicago to San Francisco: A Sweet Stop at Bob’s Donuts
As I traveled from Chicago to San Francisco for my birthday, it was an adventure filled with new sights, culture, and food. For me, one stop stood out above the rest—Bob’s Donuts, a legendary 24-hour donut shop on Polk Street that has been serving up fresh, handmade donuts since the 1960s.
Why Bob’s?
As a Chicagoan, I’m no stranger to great donuts—Stan’s, Do-Rite, and Firecakes are local favorites. But Bob’s offered something different: a nostalgic, no-frills shop that feels like stepping back in time. Open around the clock, it’s the perfect spot for a late-night snack or an early-morning sugar fix.
The Donuts
Bob’s donuts are generous in size and big on flavor. Their classic glazed raised donut is a must-try, but the apple fritter and maple bar quickly became two of my personal favorites. And if you’re feeling adventurous, take on the Texas Donut Challenge—a giant donut that, if eaten in under three minutes, earns you a place on their wall of fame.
My top pick was the Mango Malasada—a must-try if you’re searching for the best Hawaiian donuts. Malasadas are Portuguese-style fried pastries popular in Hawaii, filled with tropical fruit flavors like mango, pineapple, and guava; plus blueberry, strawberry, chocolate and more. I went with mango, and it was perfection: sweet, fluffy, and unforgettable. If only Chicago had malasadas this good!
Final Thoughts
If you’re traveling from Chicago to San Francisco, a visit to Bob’s Donuts is a must for your foodie itinerary. It’s more than a donut shop—it’s a piece of San Francisco history, best enjoyed hot out of the fryer with a cup of coffee.
Pro Tip: Visit late at night or early in the morning for the freshest batch.
