As a Chicago native, I’ve always loved exploring big cities, but my recent vacation to San Francisco gave me a whole new perspective on coastal charm. One of the highlights of my trip was visiting Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf, a world-famous waterfront district known for its fresh seafood, lively street performers, and unbeatable views of the bay.
Getting there
Both Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf are easy to reach by public transportation, rideshare, or even a scenic walk from downtown. My husband and I drove there in my rental car, but I also recommend taking the historic streetcar or cable car for a classic San Francisco experience—an activity that’s just as memorable as the destination itself.
First Impressions of Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf
Both Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf instantly feels like a mix of history, culture, and excitement. Strolling along Jefferson Street, I was greeted by colorful seafood stalls, souvenir shops, and the smell of sourdough bread drifting from Boudin Bakery. As someone from Chicago, I couldn’t help but compare the bustling waterfront to Navy Pier—but with a distinctly West Coast vibe.
Top Things to Do at Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf
There’s no shortage of activities here. We walked around the entire Pier 39. It took approximately 2 hours to get through everything. There’s tons of shops and some family amusement activities too. I was interested in all the candy and food shops. Once we headed to Fisherman’s Wharf, we stopped by to get some fresh fried shrimp. From there, we took a boat tour to see the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. History lovers will enjoy touring the USS Pampanito submarine or the Maritime National Historical Park.
After the tour, we walked over to the Ghirardelli Square Experience. I wasn’t too impressed, especially after doing a 20 minute walk over there and up the steep hills. However, there was lots of chocolate to purchase. In the main section, you can purchase sundaes and other ice cream treats.
Whether you’re into seafood, sightseeing, or family-friendly attractions, Fisherman’s Wharf offers something for everyone. It’s the perfect spot to soak in local culture, enjoy fresh seafood, and capture postcard-worthy photos of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. If you’re traveling from Chicago like me—or anywhere else—make sure to add Fisherman’s Wharf to your San Francisco travel itinerary.
