Let me start by saying, these are not my mama’s southern baked candied yams, but dang it, they come really close! She’s old school and doesn’t measure anything, so it’s taken me a few years to get this together. Give them a try and let me know in the comments what you think!
Ingredients
- 3 medium yams
- 2 tsps cinnamon
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground clove
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract (not imitation)
- 1 stick (8 tbsp) salted butter (diced)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350℉.
- Peel and slice yams into 1/2 inch discs or medium chunks.
- Rinse yams and add to a medium pot. Add water and cover top of yams.
- Boil potatoes for about 15 minutes. Scoop out yams and place into a buttered 9x9 or 9x13 baking dish.
- In a separate pot, on medium-heat, add butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cloves, salt, sugar, and vanilla extract. Heat until well combined. Pour over yams.
- Cover baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Take candied yams out of oven and carefully stir around to allow seasonings to mingle. Recover and bake for another 10 minutes. Insert a fork to ensure potatoes are done.
- Wait 10 minutes before serving.
