Tonight, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken appeared on UberEats as an option for residents in the South Shore neighborhood. This covid-restaurant-food-delivery experience is something I’m still learning. It appears certain restaurants are only available via UberEats at certain days and times and also allow travel to my neighborhood. For me this has been an odd experience, because I’ll easily travel to a restaurant to get the food, but having the restaurant come to me is apparently different.
The first time I had Gus’s was a few years ago during my trip to Memphis. The menu is still the same, but for some reason, UberEats didn’t allow me to get the 3 Piece White which is 2 Breasts and 1 Wing. They were sold out, but somehow I was able to order each chicken piece separately. Of course it cost more! Anywhoo, I added my favorite sides and dessert while the options were still there – mac and cheese, greens, and sweet potato pie.
Let me tell you – that 75 minute wait time seemed longer than ever. However when the food arrived, it was still lukewarm, but the chicken appeared to have been fried hard. Still good flavor, but maybe overcooked. I liked that the chicken was in a paper bag. I don’t know if that makes it stay crispy, but the flavor was definitely still in tact. My side choices of mac and cheese and greens didn’t disappoint. I don’t know how they cook their greens, but the potlicker is so good. When ordering the sweet potato pie, I had the option to add ice cream, but I’m glad I didn’t because again – it took 75 minutes to arrive!
Needless to say, next time, I’ll pick up the food directly from the restaurant. I’ll definitely enjoy it faster.
